Les Mills: The Intro You Need to Know

If you keep up with our blog and followed along with our last IFG Favorite Thing Feature, you’re probably already up-to-speed on the creation of the Les Mills brand. But, if you’re reading this piece first (or you’re such a Les Mills fan you don’t mind reading similar info twice), you’ll want to stay tuned for this part.

Before we take a deep dive into the Les Mills Instructor Training, we thought we’d make sure you’re acquainted with the Les Mills brand, where it came from, and how it evolved into the superstar company it is now.

The Les Mills brand all started with, you guessed it, Les Mills. Mills was a prominent athlete and four-time (yeah, we said four-time) Olympian. When his career path shifted and he moved away from Olympic shows of skill, he ended up buying and running a simple gym in Auckland, New Zealand.

The gym—which initially focused on basic strength and cardio training—eventually morphed into the hub of global fitness we all know and love today. That being said, it wasn’t necessary Les who spearheaded this evolution. Instead, his son, Phillip, took his father’s fitness model and revolutionized it, making it accessible and providing an enthusiastic approach to fitness.

For years, Phillip and his wife Jackie (both of them former high-level athletes) infused exercise with the revolution of aerobics, beginning with BODYPUMP. Though BODYPUMP is now just one of the extensive offerings the Les Mills brand touts, it remains a firm foundation for exciting exercise and acts as the backbone of the Les Mills brand.

Though the Les Mills brand had relatively humble beginnings, it’s morphed into a global phenomenon. With a team of professionals spanning the world, this brand is all about fusing technology, exercise, movement, and science.

What is Les Mills Instructor Training?

Now we’re getting to the really good stuff—the program itself.

Whether you’re already a fitness instructor or you’re on your way to becoming one, you’re going to want to know about the Les Mills Instructor Training Program.

So, what exactly is it?

The Les Mills Instructor Training is a comprehensive, all-inclusive training program that offers you—a fitness professional—everything you need to know about becoming a Les Mills-certified trainer who can offer world-leading fitness classes and motivation to people across the globe!

The course itself is a 2-day training session (typically a Saturday and a Sunday for about 8 hours each day) that you can take either in-person or online. It offers comprehensive training materials, music, choreography, and more, ultimately leading you through the step-by-step training you need to be a world-class Les Mills trainer.

At the end of the course, you’ll be ready to teach the Les Mills programs of your choice effectively, safely, and correctly.

The cool part about this training? If you’re opting for in-person training sessions, the Les Mills program has a tool that helps you search for training sessions near you!

The overall goal of this program is to train badass instructors like you to be the best of the best—you’ll become a master of group exercise, discover talents and strength you never knew you had, and the chance to receive regular education by some of the world’s best fitness mentors. Further, you’ll be teaching movements and exercises backed by science—all the classes are rigorously tested with Penn State University to ensure they’re delivering results for your members.

The program offers much more than just instructor training, though. When you sign up, you’ll also have access to exclusive instructor benefits like special offers from Les Mills On Demand, Reebok, Polar, and more. You’ll even have new music and choreography sent your way every three months to ensure that our classes stay engaged and inspired.

So, what’s the catch?

There isn’t one. If you want to be a Les Mills instructor, the only thing standing in your way is you! Because the brand expects great things from their instructors, you’ll be required to submit an assessment video within 60-days of your training in order to keep your certification.
